Planning a family holiday that caters to the interests of all the family members can be a daunting task. But fear not, because the Dolomites have you covered!

Located in the heart of the Italian Alps, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Dolomites is a picturesque region offers a plethora of activities throughout the year, ensuring an enjoyable vacation for mums, partners, and kids alike.

We’ve personally had the opportunity to visit the Dolomites with kids on various occasions and in different seasons. In this guide, we’ll explore the best seasonal activities in the Dolomites, providing recommended locations for staying in each season and practical tips to help you make the most of your family holiday.

Summer in the Dolomites – Molveno

When the sun shines bright and the weather warms up, Molveno becomes a top choice for families seeking an active summer vacation.

Molveno is a small town at the bottom of the Brenta Dolomites, just next to Molveno lake. The crystal-clear waters of Lake Molveno provide an excellent opportunity for swimming and the kids will have a blast playing on the shorefront.

For parents looking to unwind, the serene surroundings offer a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain views. There is also the opportunity to rent canoes, paddle boats or go on a short boat trip around the lake. Don’t miss taking a cable car ride for picturesque bird-eye views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

Molveno boasts numerous family-friendly hiking trails that wind through breathtaking landscapes. Pack a picnic and embark on leisurely hikes suitable for all ages.

Practical Tips

– Pack plenty of sunscreen and hats to protect the family from the strong summer sun.

– Consider booking accommodations near the lakefront for easy access to water-based activities. There is a huge campsite which leads right to the lake front, where you can camp, park your motorhome or even rent a bungalow.

– Research local restaurants in advance to find family-friendly options that cater to everyone’s taste buds.

Spring in the Dolomites – Alpe di Suisi

As winter bids farewell and nature comes alive, Alpe di Suisi emerges as a haven of sunshine and beauty in the Dolomites.

This vast high-altitude plateau, located at an average altitude of around 2,000 meters, offers a perfect springtime escape for families. Alpe di Suisi boasts an impressive 300 days of sunshine each year. The plateau’s breathtaking landscapes, adorned with colorful wildflowers, create a serene atmosphere that is perfect for family exploration.

From leisure nature walks to cycling, or even going on a horse-led carriage, there’s something for everyone in this picturesque high-altitude plateau. One of the biggest advantages of Alpe di Suisi is its flat, plateau-like terrain, offering a selection of easy to medium difficulty hiking trails, with no challenging ones. There are some options for a via ferrata, and albeit not being classified as “easy”, you can always check with the tour providers on your family’s ability to participate in such an activity.

Practical Tips

– Dress in layers, as spring weather in the mountains can be unpredictable.

– Plan hikes according to your family’s fitness level, and carry sufficient water and snacks.

– Accessing Alpe di Suisi is a bit tricky as the road leading to it closes at 9am. You can either drive with the car to Compaccio before 09:00 (or even before if the parking spaces are fully taken up) or take the cable car.

Autumn in the Dolomites – Val di Fassa

In the autumn months, Val di Fassa captivates families with its colorful landscapes and a mix of relaxation and adventure.

Enjoy leisurely strolls along the valley floor and take in the serene atmosphere as the leaves rustle underfoot. For those seeking relaxation, Val di Fassa presents the renowned QC Terme spa, where you can unwind amidst the breathtaking surroundings. On the other hand, for the adventure enthusiasts, the region offers a plethora of exciting hiking trails, an adventure park, and an exhilarating zip line experience that takes you soaring above the vibrant autumn foliage.

Practical Tips

– Check and book restaurants in advance as during this season a good number of restaurants and hotels are closed.

– Check the weather forecast before planning outdoor activities, as autumn weather can vary.

– Keep your camera ready to capture the stunning fall foliage and create lasting memories.

– Always have a back up plan for an indoor activity in case of inclement weather.

– Be aware that most of the adventure activities close at some point in September/October.

Winter in the Dolomites – Selva di Val Gardena

For a magical winter family holiday, Selva di Val Gardena in the Dolomites is the place to be. This charming alpine village in the Val Gardena valley offers a range of activities suitable for families of all ages.

Selva provides easy access to the Dolomiti Superski area, offering an extensive network of ski slopes for all levels. Book ski lessons for the kids with experienced instructors specializing in teaching children. The Sella Ronda ski circuit is a must-try for families looking to explore the stunning Dolomite scenery on skis.

If you’re not into skiing, take a thrilling sled ride down toboggan runs, explore snowshoeing or winter hiking trails, or unwind at indoor swimming pools and wellness centres in the village.

The Dolomites in winter is a truly charming place to be, a winter wonderland suitable for all ages.

Practical Tips:

– Book ski lessons in advance to secure a spot for the kids in reputable ski schools.

– Opt for family-friendly accommodations with amenities such as play areas or child care services.

– Check for family packages or discounts on lift passes to save on costs.

– Pack appropriate winter clothing and gear for the whole family.

In short…

Whether you’re swimming in the refreshing waters of Lake Molveno in summer, exploring the vibrant meadows of Alpe di Suisi in spring, admiring the autumn colors in Val di Fassa, or indulging in thrilling winter activities in Selva, the Dolomites offer something special in every season.
