Mornings don’t have to be complicated when you have some great breakfast hacks in your repertoire. In fact, breakfast can be effortless and even fun when you find tricks that work for your family. Try these quick and easy breakfast ideas for busy mums and get ready for much smoother mornings!

1. Overnight oats are popular for a reason!

If your mornings are too hectic, why not skip cooking breakfast entirely? If you make overnight oats the night before, you can just pull breakfast out of the fridge in the morning and start off the day on a calmer note. There are countless ways you can make this, but my preferred combination is on Instagram if you need some inspiration!

2. Chia pudding is another easy overnight breakfast

If you’re looking for something you can make ahead in bulk and refrigerate that isn’t overnight oats, consider chia pudding. First, just the idea of eating pudding for breakfast will appeal to a lot of picky eaters. But the real draw for me is how easy it is. You just mix omega 3-rich chia seeds, the milk of your choice, and some honey, stir, and let it work its magic in the fridge.

There are lots of recipes online, but some of the most kid-friendly ones incorporate cocoa powder to make a chocolatey pudding!

3. Think beyond the toaster

Toast is a breakfast staple, especially for picky eaters who want to have a say in what they put on it. But if you’re worried about wasting too much time standing by the toaster tending to piece after piece, I’ve got great news for you: you can toast a bunch of slices of bread at once in the oven in one of my favourite breakfast hacks.

Just place as many pieces as you need on a baking sheet. Then, pop it in the oven and turn on the grill or broiler. Watch carefully as they’ll brown quickly – we’re talking around a minute – then flip them over and give them another minute or so and breakfast is ready! No broiler? You can also just bake them in the oven at 175 C until they’re golden brown; this will take around five minutes or so per side.

4. Embrace the sheet pan trend

Sheet pan meals are having a bit of a moment right now as more people realise how quick and convenient they are for feeding crowds. But it’s all too easy to overlook how beautifully this approach can work at breakfast time – especially for cooking eggs.

You’ll find lots of recipes online, but if you’re cooking a lot of eggs, I have 2 new ways for you.

  1. Instead of trying to fit multiple eggs into your modestly-sized pan….hop onto the sheetpan trend for brekkie and make a huge batch of eggs at one go! Simply pour your eggs onto the baking pan or dish, and bake at 190C – gas 5 – 375F, for 7-10 minutes.
  2. Put the eggs in a blender and mix them up quickly. The specifics depend on how many eggs you’re making, but for 18 eggs, consider adding around a third of a cup of milk and blend, then throw in the add-ins of your choice, such as cheese or veg. Then, bake at 175 C for 15 minutes or until set. Then, slice and serve – and if you’re lucky, you’ll have leftovers for tomorrow!

5. Get creative with omelettes

As grocery shopping day approaches, one great way of reducing food waste is by scouring your fridge for those bits of vegetables and meat left over from the week that are approaching their best-by date and using them to make omelettes.

Pretty much any veg will work, and my kids won’t need much convincing if there’s a generous amount of cheese on it! This is one of my favourite breakfast hacks for getting the most out of your grocery spending!

6. Breakfast popsicles are great in summer

As the weather gets warmer, a piping bowl of oatmeal is starting to lose its appeal. But one thing everyone will welcome even on the hottest day is a breakfast popsicle.

Just stir together some Greek yogurt, honey and the milk of your choice. Pour into popsicle moulds, add some granola and/or berries, pop in a popsicle stick and then leave them in the freezer for a delicious grab-and-go breakfast.

7. Don’t overlook the sandwich maker

Older kids can make their own breakfast with a press-style electric sandwich maker, and it can be fun to come up with different combinations. Stock up on whole wheat bread and their favourite fillings, and you won’t have to make breakfast at all! From ham and cheese to Nutella and bananas, there are endless directions they can take and have a hot breakfast in a matter of minutes!

These go-to breakfast meals for busy moms can make all the difference – and best of all, you don’t have to rely on sugary cereal or other unhealthy convenience foods!

Which breakfast hack will you try first? 🙂
