Looking for storage hacks for a small kitchen? If so, you’ve come to the right place!

Many people are surprised to learn that I have a small kitchen given how much cooking I do. The truth is, I love my kitchen and I’ve enjoyed the challenge of trying to find design ideas for small kitchens that help me maximise the space I do have.

Plus, I’ve learned that no matter how big someone’s kitchen is, they never seem to have enough space! It’s a universal problem, but it does require more creativity to solve when your kitchen is smaller. So, here are 6 ideas that can help you feel like your kitchen is a little bigger than it is.

1. Think vertically

It’s easy to focus on drawers and cabinets beneath the countertop when organising your kitchen, but smaller kitchens can really benefit from storage that extends to the ceiling. If you’re building a new house or remodelling your kitchen, consider cabinets that reach the ceiling. If that’s not a possibility, look for decorative crates that fit in the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling. You’ll want to reserve this space for items you only pull out from time to time, as well as your backstock (extra stock you like to keep on hand), but you’ll be surprised how much storage space you can claim this way.

2. Consider functional décor

You can hang some of your more attractive or interesting cooking items in plain sight. For example, a cast iron skillet passed down generations in your family or a unique cutting board can be hung on your wall. They’ll be easy to reach when you need them, and they won’t take up any cabinet or drawer space at all!

3. Use a tension rod

If you keep cleaning supplies under your sink, consider placing a tension rod across the top of the cabinet. Use the rod to suspend your bottles of cleaning products by their spray handles so you can reach them easily. This is one of those cheap kitchen organization ideas that frees up space on the bottom of the cabinet for storing other items, like your sponges, brushes and cloths.

4. Consider magnetic strips

One of the easiest small kitchen hacks if you’re short on drawer space is installing a magnetic strip on a wall. You can use it to hang knives, ladles and anything else metallic that isn’t too heavy, freeing up some extra space in the drawers and cabinets you do have.

5. Tiered wire baskets = decoration + organisation

Many small kitchens will have a spot that is suitable for hanging a three-tiered wire basket, perhaps in the corner. These attractive storage hacks are very affordable, and you’d be surprised how much you can fit into their different-sized baskets. The small one on top is great for garlic and shallots, the medium one could hold oranges, bananas or apples, and the biggest one on the bottom can accommodate bigger items like bread. This is one of those creative ways to organize your kitchen that looks more like a decoration than a functional storage item.

6. Don’t overbuy

Storage hacks are great, but one easy way to deal with insufficient storage is having fewer things to store in the first place – and avoiding overbuying is a big part of that. While it may be tempting to take advantage of savings on bulk buys, it’s better to buy in proportion to your kitchen space. One great way to avoid overbuying is by meal planning. When you meal plan, you won’t buy more than you need because you’ll be making the most of everything you buy.
