If having a small laundry room leaves you dreading any clothing-related tasks, some good tiny laundry room organisation might be all you need to learn to love washing clothes again – or at least get through it with minimal frustration!

Our laundry room isn’t just tiny; it’s bordering on miniscule. There’s really just enough space to fit two washing machines side by side with a tumble dryer on top. And that’s pretty much it when it comes to floor space.

But I’ve figured out how to make the most of this compact space, so read on for my best tiny laundry room organisation hacks that I’ve picked up from way too much experience with this particular mum challenge!

1. Go vertical

When floor space is at a premium, there’s nowhere else to go but up! We built a small shelf over the washing machines for two reasons: to support the weight of the dryer and give us some space for supplies. You can even place a shelf between a stacked washer and dryer featuring a pull-out ledge that you can extend as needed – say, to set your laundry down as you take it out of the machine – and then slide out of sight when not in use.

2. Use baskets

If you use liquid detergent, you’re probably familiar with the gooey mess that often ends up beneath the bottle. You’d think they could design the caps better, but I’m convinced it’s a way to make us need to buy more sooner!

Since I haven’t found a good way to stop this dripping, I keep all my detergent bottles in baskets to contain the mess and protect my shelves. This works for powdered detergent, too, along with all those stain solutions I’ve collected over the years. Plus, it just looks more organised.

3. The sky’s the limit

In addition to shelving over your washing machine, you could use ceiling shelving in your laundry room to store more laundry supplies. However, as you’ll see in the next point, I keep some of my laundry supplies elsewhere and use my ceiling shelving here for tools and Christmas décor! I can’t say it’s pretty, but it’s certainly functional.

4. Install a wall-mounted drying rack

One of my favourite tips is installing a wall-mounted drying rack right in the laundry room. It’s the perfect spot to hang delicates to dry and can be folded back neatly when you don’t need it. Even if you’re a dryer fanatic, you’ll probably find yourself using a wall-mounted drying rack more often than you think!

5. Think outside the laundry room

Even with the cleverest tips imaginable, I simply can’t fit it all in my laundry room – but that’s okay! It’s actually really convenient to leave certain items near where you use them most. For example, I have a hook to hang my ironing board in another room that is closer to where I iron. And although it’s ideal if your laundry room has hooks for hanging your broom, mop and other cleaning implements, I keep mine in another room. If you think about it, you can find lots of convenient places to store typical laundry room items, like keeping your shoe polish near the shoes.

6. Use multiple laundry baskets

Sorting the laundry isn’t terribly fun. Is it difficult? No. But does it involve touching your kids’ dirty, sweaty clothes that have been stewing in a closed basket for a few days? Yes, it certainly does.

The solution? Multiple laundry baskets so everyone in the family can sort their own dirty clothes as they toss them in. You can then dump the baskets directly into the laundry when it’s washing day. Ours don’t fit into our laundry room (I told you it was small!), so we chose some nice fabric ones that look nice in the area where we keep them.

As you can see, some clever tiny laundry room organisation can help you make the most of even the smallest laundry room. I hope you feel inspired!
