5 fun things to do on a dreary, rainy day

The throes of winter. Summer seems so far away. Now, I am one who enjoys the cold winter days. Nonetheless, come February, I long for some warm sunshine. There are too many days when the weather is less than ideal for fun-filled days with the family.

Dreary, rainy days make me inventive. I think of ways to enjoy an otherwise bleak Sunday. This is what I’ve come up with for this winter. You might want to partake in one of the activities – winter fun is guaranteed!

1. Spend a day at Esplora

This place is a treat for kids (and parents!) of all ages alike!
The massive indoor space is perfect on the rainiest and coldest of days. We love it here because there is no getting bored! There are LOADS of interactive science exhibits, hands-on workshops being organised all year round, and the most interesting, engaging science shows happening.
The last time we visited we decided to do the Planetarium show. For some odd reason (probably because there is so much to do and see!), we’ve always opted out.
The Planetarium was the highlight of our visit! We watched this short animated movie in the 4K theatre, all about an outer space adventure.
If it just so happens that the rain stops for a wee while, out to the playground we go! There are a few fun activities for the kids (including an underground slide!), as well as a bicycles (or tricycles?) for the kids to hop on and ride on the track.
Last but not least, we can stop at Esplora cafe for coffee breaks and a light lunch to ensure we have the energy to go all day 🙂

2. Have an indoor picnic

Yes, you heard me right! The next best thing to a picnic is an indoor picnic!
Just as you would go about planning a traditional picnic, make a date with a few family members or friends. Prepare the food, clear an area of tables/chairs, and lay out a blanket.
Bonuses: you can also scatter a few cushions, and there’s no worries about hot water for teas and coffees running out!

3. Go jumping in muddy puddles

Dress your kids up in warm clothes, a raincoat and wellies, and enjoy being transported back to childhood as you join in the fun!
When everyone’s exhausted, cuddle up into the car and treat yourself to one of the drive-throughs on the island.

4. Bake

Cooking with kids is fun! If your child is aged two or older, and is able to hold a spoon, he or she can absolutely join in!
It might get just a little bit messy, so you might want to spread a few newspapers or a plastic sheet on the floor. You can use a garbage bag ripped open. Masking tape will ensure that your protective layer will stay put.
Baking with kids is very educational in itself. You can teach math skills, vocabulary, fine and gross motor skills, and of course cooking skills.
Choose a simple recipe, and have fun with it!

5. Go swimming

Erm, no, I’m not kidding.
Think about how excited your kids would be if you were to announce that you were taking them to an indoor pool on a rainy day. Chances are, on days like these indoor pools are probably quiet too. Talk about doing something unexpected!

I hope i’ve inspired you to enjoy the last few weeks of winter with a few fun activities. Spring will be here before you know it!

Much love,

Nakita xxx
