When someone says “easy family dinners,” what comes to mind?
For years, I thought it meant finding quicker recipes. One-pan meals. 30-minute dinners. Recipes with 5 ingredients.
And while there’s nothing wrong with any of those, I eventually realised I was solving the wrong problem.
The recipes weren’t what made my evenings feel stressful. It was the fact that I was starting dinner from scratch every single night.
We’ve Been Taught That Homemade Means Cooking Daily
Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that serving homemade meals meant standing in the kitchen every evening.
I certainly did. I thought that’s what good mums did.
No matter how tired I was after work, no matter how busy the day had been, I’d find myself chopping vegetables, washing pans and trying to think of something everyone would actually eat.
By the time dinner was ready, I was exhausted. And the evening I’d been looking forward to had flown by.
The Problem Isn’t Cooking
I still love serving homemade meals. I still want my family to eat food that tastes good and makes us feel good.
That hasn’t changed. What has changed is when I do the cooking.
Instead of starting from scratch every evening, I prepare ahead whenever I can. Sometimes that means doubling a recipe. Sometimes it’s cooking extra chicken while the oven is already on. Sometimes it’s making a few meals in one go and freezing them for another day.
The cooking still happens. It just doesn’t have to happen every single night.
Easy Family Dinners Start Long Before 5pm
The easiest dinners I’ve ever made are always the ones I’d already thought about.
The chicken that was already cooked. The pasta sauce waiting in the freezer. The marinated meat ready to cook.
Future Me always appreciates those small decisions Past Me made.
Instead of feeling behind before dinner has even started, I can simply pull something together and enjoy the evening with my family.
That’s what makes a dinner feel easy.
You Don’t Need More Willpower
For a long time, I thought I needed to become more organised.
More disciplined. Or, better at meal planning. Or being more organised.
But I’ve realised that easy family dinners aren’t about being perfect. They’re about making life easier for yourself.
Preparing something today doesn’t mean you have to be super organised. It means you’re being kind to your future self.
Imagine If Dinner Didn’t Dominate Your Evenings
Imagine walking into the kitchen already knowing what dinner is. Imagine not having to wonder whether you have the ingredients.
Imagine not spending the busiest part of your day chopping vegetables while everyone else is hungry.
Imagine sitting down sooner. Talking more. Rushing less.
That’s what I discovered when I stopped believing that homemade meals meant cooking every evening.
One Small Shift Can Change Everything
If there’s one thing I’d love you to take away from this, it’s this:
Easy family dinners aren’t created at 5pm. They’re created by tiny decisions you make earlier, when you have the time and the headspace.
You don’t have to prepare every meal.
You don’t have to spend your Sundays batch cooking.
You don’t have to become “that organised person.”
Just start by making one future dinner a little easier. Because the goal isn’t to spend less time caring for your family. It’s to spend less time standing at the cooker, and more time around the table with the people you love.
Love,
Nakita xxx
