If you’d asked me a few months ago…

If you had asked me a year ago whether I’d ever install an under-sink water filtration system, my answer would have been an immediate no.

Not because I didn’t like the idea, or because I didn’t think they worked. Simply because I genuinely believed we didn’t have the space.

Our kitchen isn’t big, and the cupboard beneath our sink is already working hard. We have three bins underneath for sorting our rubbish, so I’d always assumed there was no room for any kind of filtration system. I’d also heard people talking about reverse osmosis systems that needed additional space or more complicated installations, so every time someone mentioned them, I’d quickly dismiss the idea.

“We don’t have the space.” That was always my answer.

So instead, we happily used a water filter jug for years. It worked well. The water tasted good, we replaced the filter roughly once a month, and it had simply become part of our routine.

I wasn’t looking for a different solution. Until I came across the InlinePro by Tappwater Malta.

What made me curious

One day I came across Tap Water Malta on social media.

What immediately caught my attention wasn’t actually the filtration itself.

It was how compact the system looked.

So I headed over to their website to learn more. When I saw the dimensions, I genuinely couldn’t believe my eyes. At just 35 cm high and 10 cm wide and deep, it’s roughly the height of a 2-litre bottle of water, but much slimmer.

Suddenly, I found myself wondering whether it might actually fit underneath our sink after all.

So I reached out. Someone came to have a look at our kitchen and, to my surprise, confirmed that yes, it would comfortably fit underneath our sink.

I honestly couldn’t believe it. A solution I’d dismissed for years because I assumed it wasn’t possible suddenly became a real option.

Installation

Booking the installation was straightforward, and their technician arrived exactly as planned.The entire installation took around 15 minutes. Easy.

Although we chose to have Tappwater Malta’s authorised technician install ours, it’s worth mentioning that you can also install the InlinePro yourself. It comes with clear instructions, is designed for straightforward DIY installation, and only requires a spanner if you’re comfortable tackling simple plumbing jobs. If you’d like to opt for the technician installation, the cost is between €25-€35.

One of the biggest surprises was just how little space the unit actually takes up underneath the sink. Looking at the dimensions online is one thing, but seeing it installed behind our three recycling bins really put its compact size into perspective.

Even better, we kept our existing kitchen tap.
Before installation, I’d assumed we’d need one of those taps with separate handles for filtered and unfiltered water because I worried we’d be “wasting” filtered water.

As it turns out, that wasn’t necessary at all. The filter has such a generous capacity (lasts up to 20,000 litres), that we simply use the filtered water throughout the day without giving it a second thought.

The moment of truth… would my daughter approve?

I’ll admit something. I wasn’t worried about whether I would like the water. I was worried about my daughter.

She’s incredibly particular about drinking water. In fact, whenever we travel abroad, one of my biggest challenges is finding a bottled water brand she’ll actually drink. She notices tiny differences in taste that most people probably wouldn’t even pick up.

So when the InlinePro was installed, I handed her a glass with slight nervousness. She took a sip. Paused. Then simply said she liked it. Relief!

The water tastes very similar to what we were already enjoying with our filter jug, but perhaps just a little smoother. Most importantly, everyone in the family enjoys drinking it.

The biggest difference isn’t actually the taste

This might surprise you. If you asked me what I love most about the InlinePro, my answer wouldn’t actually be the water itself.

It’s the convenience. Filtered water is always there. There’s no waiting or remembering to refill the jug, or checking whether there’s enough filtered water left.

No accidentally pouring before the water has finished filtering (and making a mess because the entire jug of water spills on the floor). There’s no clutter on the countertop: jug, bottles being refilled and waiting in queue…
You simply turn on the tap.

It sounds like such a small thing, but these little everyday inconveniences disappear completely. And I didn’t know what a relief it would be before actually experiencing it.

Life before and after

Here’s the easiest way I can describe the difference.

If you’re still buying bottled water…

Although we were already using a filter jug, I know many families in Malta still buy bottled water every week.

If that’s you, here’s how I’d compare the two.

If you’ve ever carried multiple packs of water upstairs in the summer heat, you’ll understand why this alone is a huge benefit.

The little things that have changed

Filling reusable water bottles is effortless. Making tea or coffee is easier because I simply fill the kettle directly from the tap. Cooking pasta or rice? Same thing. Making ice cubes? Easy. Washing fruit and vegetables? No second thought.

We’ve also started making homemade iced tea more often because filling large jugs is now so quick and convenient.

One unexpected bonus? Our fridge is almost always stocked with cold water because filling bottles has become so effortless.

A tidier kitchen

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know I love practical systems that make everyday life simpler.

Removing the water jug from the worktop has made our kitchen feel noticeably tidier. We also used to keep glass bottles nearby waiting to be filled because the jug could only filter so much water at once.

Now that entire area has been cleared. It’s amazing how much difference a clear countertop can make. It’s visually pleasing to look at, easier to clean, and I have more space to work with too.

Maintenance

One of the reasons we were happy with our jug was that maintenance was simple. Thankfully, that’s still true here.

For our household, the filter only needs replacing once a year. Compared to replacing a jug filter every month, that’s a welcome change. I simply added a recurring reminder to our calendar, and that’s one less thing to remember.

We’ve not needed to replace the filter yet, so I can’t comment on that process from personal experience, but so far the system has required virtually no attention.

Costs

At the time of writing, the Inline Pro costs €169, and replacement filters cost €59. For a household like ours, that’s typically one replacement filter each year. 

It’s also worth checking whether you’re eligible for the government grant (below). Eligible households can currently claim 60% of the purchase and installation cost, up to a maximum of €100, making the initial investment even more attractive. 

Government grant

If you’re considering installing a filtration system in Malta, it’s also worth checking the current government grant available for eligible households.

At the time of writing, eligible households can apply for a government grant covering 60% of the purchase and installation cost, up to a maximum of €100. This means you get the full €100 back, from **€**169!

We have recently submitted our application. My husband handled it and found the process quite straightforward, although we have only recently applied, so I cannot yet comment on how quickly the grant is paid or confirm that our application has been approved.

According to REWS, a complete application is generally assessed within around five weeks. Once approved, the grant is paid directly into the applicant’s bank account. I will update this article once we have received ours.

Is there anything I don’t love?

Not really. I’ve had to rack my brains here to come up with something. The most obvious is the initial investment. Like any quality appliance, there is an upfront cost.

However, if you’ve been buying bottled water or regularly replacing filter jug cartridges, it’s worth considering the long-term value rather than only the purchase price. All things taken into consideration (without including the government grant…more info on that too)…the InlinePro actually works out cheaper for us than using the water jug.

The only other thing to remember is replacing the filter when it’s due.

For us, that’s easily solved with a yearly calendar reminder. Other than that, we’ve genuinely struggled to find faults.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely. And not because our previous setup didn’t work. It did, but the Inline Pro quietly removes lots of tiny everyday frustrations.

No waiting.
No monthly filter changes.
No water jug taking up space.
No wondering whether there’s enough filtered water left.

Just great-tasting water whenever you need it. For busy families, that’s exactly the kind of upgrade I appreciate most.

And if you’re upgrading from bottled water, I think you’ll appreciate it even more.

Living with the InlinePro has made drinking water easier, more efficient and far more convenient for our whole family.

It’s one of those improvements that quietly makes dozens of little everyday tasks simpler. Looking back, I honestly wish I’d realised years ago that a system like this could fit in our kitchen.
